A darker side of Cinderella than you may remember...

(It's not entirely polished yet - some tweakings to do - but you get the idea.)

-----------

another day to paint in
monochrome and aching
another battle raging
between realities and dreams
another mountain to climb
another shackle to unwind
another scar beneath her skin
another hole to fill in

and her imagination
she swallowed deep inside her
because they told her it was
dangerous to dream
but now she cuts it open
peers inside to breathe it in
she finds herself surrounded
by all the ghosts she's been

this is not my story
this is not the end
cos everyone is always
happy in the end, aren't they?
this is not my story
this is not the end
cos everyone is always
happy in the end

aren't they?

as her defences fall down
around her fractured portraits
where shadowed thoughts become her
hated demons, taunting,
whispering on street corners
- don't stop now - keep running -
the blood keeps pounding in her ears
a city blurring in her tears

her defiance tells her
the biggest lie it ever told her
"I am not afraid!"
"No I am not afraid!"
but she's afraid of every
second she must face alone
her severed self bleeding
from a thousand stars she wished upon

this is not my story
this is not the end
cos everyone is always
happy in the end, aren't they?
this is not my story
this is not the end
cos everyone is always
happy in the end

I know I'm meant to be loved
I know I'm meant to be loved
(etc. etc. etc......)

this is not my story
this is not my story
(etc. etc. etc......)
and I don't want to be alone

this is not my story
this is not my story
everyone is always
happy in the end

aren't they?

-----------

This is my final fairytale concept song. I've only uploaded 'Rapunzel' and this one up here so far though. Maybe you'll hear the other two ('Sleeping Beauty' and 'The Goose Girl') at some point :)

This was a kind of rush of inspiration. I'd already recorded a different Cinderella song but it was totally different... far more light-hearted, fun, sweet-natured... and it didn't feel right somehow. So I got annoyed with it and started again from sratch. And I like this one much better. It's so much darker but so much more honest.

It's not directly related to any part of the fairytale, but it's how I imagine Cinderella to be feeling - alone and unloved and lost, filled with ghosts of herself, mistreated and taunted by her demons which she is forever running away from, because she's so afraid to grasp the gleam of hope that her heart shows her. She wants to believe she will be loved but she doesn't know how to believe it.

Absolutely amazing. If I hadn't known any better I would have thought this person was a professional singer. Simplistic and yet well done. Recommended by

Pretty. :3

Cyril Says:

Your singing style makes me think of Ian Anderson (lead singer/flute player/lyricist for Jethro Tull) sounds really great. Mystical, dark and deep. GOOD JOB! AGAIN.

2key Says:

you have SOMETHING annie lennoxish in your voice(consider a compliment)... very nice and very unique voice... love it as always...

Doodlibop Says:

*0* Ooohhhh!
Oh, Helen, how I love your music! This song has a certain Alanis Morriset touch to it, but you beat her out by 10x imho!
Btw, do you have your own studio by any chance? The quality of your music (in composition as well) is ASTOUNDING!

Will we ever get to duet together some how?

Minstrel Ayreon Says:

The layering of harmonies is just incredible...plus I'm just amazed that you could come up with a darker take on the Cinderella story without it coming out emo. At the end, you also have a neat unresolved pitch that hints musically what you do in the lyrics, that it's not the end of her story. I like that kind of attention to detail!

Oddy Says:

Gorgeous song, Helen.
Reminds me of something Imogen Heap would do.

What sticks out is the piano's expressiveness. Is it one of Reason's default NN-XT patches?

DeE AltMarK Says:

wow,your amazing.
