I'm wondering if that happens before scores get put in on enough pieces.
What I've noticed is that at a certain time of night, all of the scores seem to "expire" and the front page goes into flux for a few hours. During that time, things in some of the categories with fewer submissions can appear just because they were submitted right around that time. I think obviously there's a bug, but if you want to submit music you don't want on the front page, for the moment I'd advise you to wait until the morning.
Here's my take: With no way to score it, it had a score of 0, right? The audio section is vastly ignored when compared to, say, the art and Flash sections. So not many people vote on audio, so after that first one, there were no other submissions with a score higher than 1, so your submission was picked at random due to there being nothing with a higher score that was submitted within the past 24 hours.
