The Dimension of Sight

It was a normal summer night. All was calm and the wind blew softly on the land. The trees rustled their leaves creating a nice sound to complement the warm soothing breeze. Trevor sat under one of these trees thinking. Thinking about anything and everything actually. His mind wondering around in ideas and new thoughts added old thoughts to create revelations. His mind clicked like clockwork, its many cogs turning effortlessly to combine past present and future into thoughts usable to him. Information gathered during the day was swept past the pendulum in his mind and was added to the conveyor belt of upcoming thought. In this folder, of today's thoughts, lied so many details, some useless and some valuable. But that would be determined soon.

Ever since Trevor was a boy he had had this strange ability to sleep while awake. Although that sounds confusing, Trevor made it possible. He had an amazing mind unsurpassable to any normal human. He was able to calculate large sums of numbers in this dream like state as if he were walking. It was that easy. Unlike normal people, Trevor had the uncanny ability to force his mind to think harder, faster, and smarter. But his grades begged to differ.

The breeze continued to soar lightly through the land making the thousands of blades of grass do their ritual dance in the beautiful light of the full moon. Their movements making the land look like it was alive. The gears kept turning as he thought. The cat walking on top of that barn...Useless. The thought was discarded immediately into a neat pile of paper with text and images scrawled on them. The fight after school between the two groups? Maybe useful. And so it was kept. Filed away in the deep folds of his mind to be seen another day.

He learned he had this unique ability when he was very young. He was drowsy and decided to take a nap under the same tree Trevor is right now. He closed his eyes and let his dreams play through in his mind, laying out what he had experienced that day and determining what was useful and what was not. Then something different happened. The young Trevor opened his eyes but was still asleep. "Trevor..." said a lofty voice. It floated on his mind like a mist rolling in from the mountains, shrouding his mind in a mysterious dark envelope. "I have a gift for you should you choose to accept it..."

"What is it?" Trevor asked curiously. He was only four years old at the time and did not know the secrets of sleep.

"You'll find out soon enough." answered the mysterious voice. The voice seemed to linger on its words as if it were tasting them. Although Trevor could not see who was speaking, he felt the mist grinning. It continued to cover his mind, submersing his thoughts into a well of dark water. "Focus... I will ask once more, do you wish to receive this gift?"

"Yes. I suppose so." With that, the dark voice chuckled-

"Very well." The mist condensed into a thick fog and thunder could be heard in the background. Lightning struck the mountains like whips striking a defiant dog. The mountains seemed to cry as they were stricken with the bright lashes of light. There was a loud banging noise and Trevor knew he had been struck by lightning. Immediately he jolted awake to find his mother staring at him eye to eye. Her gaze was intense. "Honey? Are you all right?"

"All right? Yeah I'm- OWW!" The young Trevor closed his eyes firmly and rubbed them with his fists. What was going on? "What happened to me?" his mother had a very worried look on her face then she answered,

"You were sleeping with your eyes open." But that was eleven years ago.

In later years Trevor would discover his new gift, his new talent. He learned to control it and bring it to good use when he needed to. New parts of his mind had been opened. Parts and feelings that a normal human being would never understand in words. Sleep takes a long road usually taking up 8 to 10 hours to clean our memories out of useless information. But in our dreams it only feels like ten minutes. We are temporarily entering another dimension but not all the way. Our minds are halfway submerged into a new realm of sight where our minds can wander and work more efficiently. But the subconscious mind is not trained that is why we cannot control our dreams.

The gift Trevor had received eleven years ago under the very tree he was now was simply this; the ability to train his subconscious mind to do his bidding. With a new door opened to his own mind Trevor was able to do unexplainable things. He knew every answer in math class but never did his homework. Why must he prove that he could do it when everyone knew he already could? He read books and novels in just a few minutes where it would normally take a week or two. With his subconscious brought forth out of the deep murky waters of his mind he was able to translate text and numbers directly into his memory without waiting for his conscious mind to understand it.

The wind slowly stopped as it fell asleep. The tree's leaves stopped rustling and the grass stopped dancing. Everything was quiet. Only the brilliant light of the moon made a difference in the surroundings. The wind has stopped...But the moon is still bright. Perhaps I can dig further. Trevor already had enough mental capacity to make him the worlds smartest human but he didn't want that. He only wanted to explore his mind. He wanted to see how deep the murky waters of the new dimension were. So he swam.

Far out into his mind he swam, passing the occasional stray thought or calculation. A book he read last week in just ten minutes. The random thoughts he used to come by lessened as he swam further into his mind. He needed to know what and everything he was capable of. Further... Further. Further! Yes, he could feel it. Another door. Perhaps to another dimension. Trevor put his hand on this new door and twisted the brass knob. A bright light was emitted through the crack in the door. Trevor winced at the bright light but was still curious. He needed to know what was behind this new door in his mind. He peeked inside but saw nothing. The light was too bright. He knew he had to go further. He opened the door more and stepped inside. His eyes ewre adjusting to the light and he saw so many things. Too many things. Back in the real world, his body was taking damage. His mind was having a hard time sustaining his body when it was this far away. Blood ran down his lips from his nose. It dribbled off his chin into a small pile on the ground.

Further... Just a little more, I have to know. Then he saw a dark figure, the same one that offered him his power so many years ago. "Hey! How did you get in-" The voice was cut off as Trevor's mind shut down.

The sun was high in the air when Trevor woke from his stupor. His eyes were very sensitive to the bright light of the sun, more so then ever before. He squinted and pulled his legs in towards his chest. He put his had to his nose and wiped it. When he pulled it away he noticed his hand was a dark crimson red. What happened to me? He thought nervously. Did I go too far? His eyes couldn't take it. He needed to go inside. No doubt his parents were worried sick about him. He had never been away from his house so long without telling anyone. He slowly got up and kept one hand on the tree for better balance.

His legs were incredibly unstable as he put his weight on them. Trevor was a boy of fifteen and had bright green eyes. His head was adorned with careful paint brush strokes of hair sporting beautiful blonde and brown hair. He was very skinny because he had an extremely fast metabolism. His mind needed constant food and nourishment from being used so much. He knew he needed food soon and his stomach agreed with him as it let out a small grumble. He let go of the tree and put his hand like the brim of a hat on his forehead. He squinted and looked at his surroundings. The grass was a luxurious green and it waved at him in a rhythmic motion.

He started to walk forward in a direct path towards home. He looked ahead at his house and then back at the ground. His black pants were covered in dirt and his sneakers weren't very pretty either. He would have to wash the blood out of them when he got home. He glanced back at the house and saw that both his parent's cars were gone. "Good." Trevor muttered to himself. His voice was very crackly from not being used in a good 24 hours. He continued walking towards his house quickening his pace as his stomach rumbled again.

He reached the back door and attempted to open it finding it firmly locked. He stepped back and onto a bench. He reached over the roof into the gutter and pulled out a key. He placed it into the key hole and twisted it to the left. He pulled it out and put it back when the door was unlocked and opened it. He stepped into the house and took off his shoes. He picked them up and dropped them into the laundry machine and pressed the start button. The water filled the small chamber and Trevor froze. The water had him in a trance and his entire field of vision rippled like a pool of water. He broke away from the trance and shook his head. He closed the washer lid and ran to his room.

Once in his room he took out a case from under his bed and opened it. It was stocked full of energy drinks. He let out a breath of air and opened one of the many bottles. The carbonation escaped and he put the bottle to his lips, "This should wake me up." He took a long drink and then put the bottle down abruptly. His eyes were fixed on something else. But it wasn't in this world. His vision rippled again, this time longer and harder than before. His eyes stung as he ripped his attention away from this mysterious thing that kept grabbing his attention.

He closed the bottle shut as he screwed on the lid. He stood up and walked softly into the bathroom. He sat down on the toilet and put his face in his hands. What's going on? Did I do something bad for my mind? Another ripple coursed through Trevor's vision and he let out a yelp of pain. He slammed his eyes shut and bit his lip until it bled. The blood fell softly down his chin and into his lap. He reluctantly opened his eyes and turned his attention towards his hands, they were wet... But not with tears. He lifted his hand to his face and wiped his eyes. When he took back his hand to see what was there he started breathing faster. Red. His hands were soaked in blood. He turned towards the mirror and gasped in horror as he saw his eyes emitting a constant flow of red tears. He looked closer at the mirror and another ripple hit his eyes with such force that he dropped to his knees crying.

He looked at the mirror one last time and noticed something different about his eyes. They were different in colour... An icy blue sheen covered his eyes as pain soared through his body. He looked again and noticed something else. The pupil in his right eye was huge... It was pushing the iris aside making a big black dot in his eye until there was nothing but a big black circle and white. He continued crying and placed his hands on the window. The blood covering his hands made prints on the mirror and stained the floor.

BOOM! There was one last ripple in his vision and Trevor screamed in agony. He fell to the floor, eyes halfway open looking at the ceiling. "Why..." He managed to get out on a short breath. He saw things... The things that were beyond the portal. Behind the door! The dark foggy man was there staring at him eye to eye. It was intense.

"Hello Trevor..." Was the one the it said and the last thing Trevor heard.

That's the end for now! Thanks for reading! I should have another installment in maybe sometime this month. I hope you all liked it. If you have any ideas for me, please leave a comment, right now my brain feels as fresh out of ideas as a peach in a microwave. *Painful!*

This is a new story. I like writing this darker stuff. Please! Give me feedback! I need to know how to make my writing skills better. By the way, besides writing essays at school, this and my other story called "Chess" are they only things I've ever written so I'm guessing I suck. Thanks for reading!

EDIT: Whoa! I can't believe I got front page with this piece of work! Thanks everyone! But I still need more feedback. And if you liked it, please give me a "Yes." Thanks everyone!
