The Moon's Murderers: Chapter 04
Telephones were ringing from every direction of the massive office floor. Desks were positioned in certain ways to allow the most spacious design. All the employees were busy working...
Suddenly there was a knock at the door and he looked away from his computer. A small sigh left his mouth as he sat back in his chair to relax for a few moments.
"Come in," he said. The door to his office opened to reveal a female employee in a brown colored business suit.
"Here is your coffee, Mr. Lau," she said.
"Thanks Patricia. What's on the agenda today?" he asked.
"There are no appointments scheduled for today. However, the accounting period is close to an end and you will have to check the financial statements as well as everything else later on. Then in a few days, you will have to check the adjusting entries as well as the adjusted trial balances," she replied. Mr. Lau closed his eyes, took of his glasses, and pinched the area that his glasses rested at.
"Okay, thanks Patricia," he said. She nodded and walked out of his office, closing the door behind her. Patricia was his personal secretary that deals with all of his business schedules, as well as putting down a list of what he has to get done. Before he got to continue working, his cell phone rang. Another sigh left his mouth as he looked at his cell phone, which was currently lying on his office desk next to his file documents. He picked it up and answered it.
"Hello?"
"Mr. Zhen Lau, please."
"This is he."
"Hi, I am calling from the hospital. Your cousin, Devin Lee, has just woken up from his coma and we wanted to contact you as soon as possible. Does he have any other family..." Before the nurse got to finish what she wanted to say, Zhen immediately interrupted her.
"I will be right there," he hastily replied before grabbing his blazer, keys, and rushing out of his office. On his way out, he stopped by Patricia's desk and said, "If anyone calls, tell them that I'm busy for the day." And he was gone.
Zhen Lau, slayer by night, and accountant by day. He is currently twenty-eight years of age. He is also a full-blooded Chinese. He works as a controller of the accounting department in a well-known electronics company. His wife, Sophia Lau, is a housewife. Zhen's parents, currently, are living in China. Devin Lee, in all honesty, is not his cousin but he had to tell the hospital that for a certain amount of reasons.
In minutes, Zhen was out of the building and trying to get a taxi. He looked around, waved his arms, and wanted to shout. "How come when you don't want a taxi, there's one everywhere and when you do want a taxi, there's none on the streets?!" Zhen then ran down the street to the corner and tried to catch a taxi - he succeeded!
When the taxi reached the hospital, Zhen merely took out a random amount of cash out of his pockets and threw it at the driver. Then he rushed into the hospital - he couldn't even patiently wait for the elevator, he ran up the stairs! Once he got up to Devin's room, he stopped in his tracks. Zhen was breathing heavily from worry, anxiety, and of course, all the running.
Devin was currently standing against the windowsill, looking out with a blank stare. He was wearing one of those white outfits that every patient wore. He had on blue colored slippers and his arm had an IV stuck in, connecting to a nutrition packet. All those heart monitoring systems and life support systems had already been taken out of the room. He didn't even need to look at who was at the door because he already knew. There was completely silence for a few minutes as Zhen looked at Devin and Devin looking out into the streets.
"Where's Hotaru?" Devin asked. That's the first thing out of Devin's mouth after five years of being in a coma. Nope, there was no "Hello" nor was there a "What happened." All he cared about was her. Zhen didn't answer him. Devin turned his head around and looked straight into Zhen's eyes. Zhen looked away.
"Where is she, Zhen?" he asked once again. Zhen's hands were tightened into fists.
"You shouldn't be up. You've been in a coma for five years. You should rest more," Zhen said. Devin kept staring at him.
"I've rested for five years - don't you think that's enough? I'm completely fine; I've fully recuperated. Now, answer me, where is she?" Still silence.
"Zhen, damn it, why won't you tell me where she is?" shouted Devin.
"Get over it, Devin. She's a vampire, you''re a slayer - we're destined to be in two worlds at war," replied Zhen as he raised his head to meet Devin's gaze. Devin walked over to Zhen and stood right in front of him. Before Zhen knew what was happening, he was lying on the ground with his hands holding his jaw. Devin was towering over his body, his hands clenched into his fists, and his body shaking with rage.
"How can you, of all people, say that, Zhen? You've known her for over twenty years. How can you turn your back on her now?" asked Devin.
"Me? I should be asking you. How can you still protect her after what she did to you? She was the reason you were in a coma for five years. She was the reason you were hurt. She was the fucking damned reason that you got stabbed!" shouted Zhen as he slowly stood back up, looking at Devin face-to-face.
"t was my path to choose, Zhen. It was my decision to protect her before and it is still my decision to protect her now. She is not the one to blame for my injury," stated Devin.
"Like hell it wasn't!"
"Then why haven't you sought revenge, Zhen? Why haven't you killed her yet?" asked Devin.
"What makes you think I haven't killed her off already while you were in a coma?" Zhen countered.
"Cause you're the crappiest liar on this planet," he replied calmly. Zhen merely glared at him.
"I'm going to kill her, Devin. I can promise you that. I will kill her right front of your eyes. I will make her regret ever using you as a shield," Zhen whispered venomously. Devin immediately grabbed Zhen by the collar and slammed him into the wall next to them.
"If you do, then our friendship is gone. If you do, you will become my enemy," replied Devin.
"Then so be it. She is a vampire and so is Rikku. They both need to die. It is our jobs or have you forgotten who killed your family?" Devin's grip tightened.
"Don't you dare dig into my past," whispered Devin.
"Whether or not you want it, whether or not you want the revenge ... I will accomplish what I've set out to do," replied Zhen as he pried Devin's hands off of him. Zhen straightened out his dress shirt, turned, and left. Devin stood there for a few minutes before slamming his fists into the hospital walls.
"Tsk tsk tsk. Is it worth it to throw everything away for a woman?" asked an unknown voice. Devin turned around and there he was, standing next to the window. This man wore a drench coat, covering most of his body - he also had on black jeans, black leather colored shoes, and sunglasses that covered his eyes. His hair was pure black and his hands were currently in the pockets of his drench coat. Devin eyed him briefly.
"Who are you and how did you get in here?"
"Well now, right now, those things don't matter because I'm here to offer you a chance of a lifetime," replied the man.
"Offering me a few billion dollars? No? Then get the hell out," retorted Devin.
"I could turn Hotaru back into a human being," the man simply replied. Devin looked at him, his body immediately tensing, and his eyes narrowed slightly.
"I'm listening," he replied.
"I could turn Hotaru back into a human being but there is a condition..."
"State it," replied Devin.
"Separate her from Rikku Kwon," the man replied with a serious tone. Devin merely stared at him while his mind was wheeling. The man suddenly had a ghost of a smile on his lips. "Take your time. I'll come back when you're ready to give me an answer." He walked towards the door that will allow him to walk out of the room.
"Where would I find you?" Devin asked. The man looked at him.
"You'll know when the time comes," and then the man was gone. Devin looked down the halls but didn't see the man at all - it was almost like the man had disappeared into thin air.
"Didn't even get his name," Devin mumbled.
Meanwhile, Rikku had just gotten up to the top floor of her business building. She stopped by the secretary's desk after getting there.
"Mr. Takimoto wanted to see me?" she asked. The secretary smiled at her and stood up from her desk. She made a gesture with her hand.
"Right this way, Ms. Kwon," the secretary replied, showing Rikku the way. They walked until they were faced with two big doors. The secretary opened one of the doors and gestured Rikku to walk in. Rikku looked at her for a few brief seconds before walking in. However, once she got in, the doors immediately closed behind her.
"What a nice ... way to show me in," she mumbled. In front of her was a spacious room with a couch, coffee table, bar, and a huge window that looked out into the busy streets and skyscrapers of New York City.
"Welcome to my office, Ms. Kwon," said a man. Then a man walked out into her view of vision and smiled at her. Their eyes locked. After a few minutes of silence and staring at each other, Rikku looked away. There was an attraction between them but Rikku ignored it. There was something about his eyes ...
"Yes, you wanted to see me?" she asked.
"Don't be shy. Please, take a seat," he replied. Rikku hesitated but took a seat on one of the couches anyways. "So, you graduated from an Art Academy?"
"Yes."
"I heard you are always late to work."
"I enter this building at exactly the right time," she replied with a cold voice. 'Go figure that old fart would tell on me,' she thought.
"Don't be mistaken. I'm not here to ramble to you about your work ethnics. I could care less when you get to work - the truth is that you can do your work," he said.
"That's good to know Mr. Takimoto."
"Please, call me Cain."
"Well, if there's nothing more, Mr. Takimoto, I have to get back to work," Rikku replied, blatantly ignoring his request to strip formalities.
"What's the hurry, Rikku?" he asked. She immediately glared at him. "Oh, I'm sorry, Ms. Kwon." She looked away and stared at the large window. Cain looked at her for a few seconds before following her gaze. "Beautiful, isn't it?" She didn't reply. He walked over to the bar and took out two wine glasses. "Want something to drink?" No reply. He poured red wine into the two wine glasses despite not getting an answer. He placed one of the wine glasses on the coffee table in front of her while he took a sip out of his own glass.
Rikku didn't even look at him, nor did she look at the wine glass placed in front of her. She kept looking out of the window. Seconds past, minutes past, and there was still silence. Cain, all this time, was staring at her and critiquing her profile.
'Good profile, great legs, and I'm pretty sure she'd be a great model,' were the thoughts that were going through his head. Suddenly, he heard her clearing her throat, which caused him to break out of his reverie.
"What is the real reason you called me up here, Mr. Takimoto? We've never met before, we've never talked before ... I really doubt you called me up here just so we can chitchat," she said.
"And what if I did?" he asked.
"Then you're wasting my valuable time," she replied.
"Really now. I'm the one that technically pays you for your time."
"And I'm the one that works to earn that pay," she retorted.
"I'm the one who determines whether or not you have to work." She turned her head to look at him.
"Are you threatening me, sir?" she asked. Oh, he was interested in her all right. Her attitude, her fearlessness, and he definitely loved her spunk. He smirked to himself. He wanted her.
"Dear, no. I'm just saying a few facts. That's all," he replied.
"I have a shipment of clothing that needs to get organized by 2:00 PM. Therefore, if you'll excuse me, I'll go back to work now," she said as she stood up, getting ready to leave.
"Have lunch with me and I'll send the file documents to someone else to handle. Have lunch with me - I'm interested in you," he said bluntly. She put a hand on her hips and looked at him.
"Too bad I don't feel the same. Sorry Sir but I really have to get back to work. I don't get paid to have lunch with the boss," she replied just as bluntly. Then, she walked out.
Cain Takimoto just merely smiled and stared at his wine glass. He wanted to laugh but he couldn't. All he did was smile.
"You will be mine one way or another, dearest Rikku."
Rikku immediately took the elevator, getting back to her own office floor. After she got back onto her floor, she rushed out of the elevator and past everyone. Without even bothering to listen to anyone, she locked herself in her office. Her heart was bounding, her pulse was speeding, and she found it hard to breathe. There was something wrong with her boss, there was something wrong about his aura, and his attitude did not please her at all. Something told her that he was dangerous but she can't help but to be curious about him.
"What am I thinking?! I'm not here to look at boys. I have a job to do and a lunch date to get to!" she muttered to herself, getting straight back to work.
